Distance Learning Program
Distance Education and Independent Study (DEIS), in conjunction with academic colleges and departments, coordinates educational opportunities designed primarily for working professionals who are unable to attend classes on campus. From the Executive M.B.A. and the sign language interpreter sequence to the nuclear or civil engineering M.S. degrees and noncredit classes in information technology (IT) fields, hundreds of students each semester find distance education and independent study can help them meet their educational goals.

UT offers Web and correspondence courses to home school, high school, or college students. Courses for high school credit, graduation or entrance requirements, college credit toward a degree, professional development, or personal enhancement are offered in a variety of subjects, including foreign languages, social sciences, natural sciences, engineering, business, communications, math, English, history, and many others.

Courses are delivered by a wide variety of technologies. Some courses are offered via the Web and correspondence while others are offered via advanced voice/data interactive "cyberclass" technology over the Internet. Students "meet" using multimedia computers and the Internet. Correspondence courses via postal mail, e-mail, and "click-to-learn" Web delivery methods provide undergraduate credit to individuals anywhere, anytime.

UT's Information Center, available via Web or phone, provides support for inquiries, bookstore, and library services. Access to library services, academic advising, books, materials, and career placement assistance are provided through a central portal, creating a convenient and friendly environment for students.

Programs of Study
UT offers many undergraduate courses, graduate degrees, and certificate programs. The College of Engineering offers the Master of Science in Civil Engineering, public works option; Master of Science in Environmental Engineering, waste management option; Master of Science in Industrial Engineering, engineering management concentration; and the Master of Science in Nuclear Engineering.

The Master of Science in Information Science, accredited by the American Library Association, focuses on electronic and traditional print media. Available via the Internet, the program requires 42 semester graduate course hours. The Master of Science in Nuclear Engineering, available via the Internet, requires 24 semester graduate course hours, plus 6 credit hours of research, and is intended for students interested in nuclear engineering, health physics, or radiological engineering careers.

The three flexibly delivered Executive M.B.A. programs, offered through UT's College of Business Administration, combine Internet-delivered courses with on-campus residence periods.

Online certificate programs include UT's Graduate Certificates in applied statistics, maintenance and reliability engineering, and nuclear criticality safety.

The Internet eLearning Institute (IEI) provides certificate programs, professional development courses, and training for information technology professionals interested in updating their skills and for students seeking high-quality Web training to pursue IT careers. Courses in the areas of e-commerce, Web databases, Web mastering, network systems engineering, administrative technology, technical sales, and instructional technology are offered via the Internet. Applying for Distance Education
Students should visit the Web site listed below or contact the Information Center for detailed application information. Students may register by mail, fax, telephone, Internet, or in person.

University admission is not required to take undergraduate correspondence or Internet eLearning Institute courses. Application to the UT Graduate School is required for credit or audit of graduate distance education courses.

College credits for distance education graduate programs are recorded on a UT transcript in the same manner as credits earned in on-campus courses. Credits earned in independent study courses are generally transferable to other colleges and universities toward the completion of a degree. Internet eLearning Institute courses qualify for CEU professional credit.
