Distance Learning Program:
Thomas Edison State College offers one of the most comprehensive distance learning programs in the country. Originally founded in 1972 to serve the needs of adult students exclusively, this world-renowned institution is a national leader in the assessment of adult learning and a pioneer in the use of educational technologies. Adults may choose from among more than 150 distance learning courses, including online classes. Students also may take examinations and submit portfolios to demonstrate and earn credit for college-level knowledge they already have and transfer credits earned at other accredited institutions.
Distance education courses are provided through several options, including Thomas Edison State College courses offered through the mail, e-mail and online. Online credit-by-examination through e-Pack courses, which allows students to prepare for a comprehensive final examination by taking a series of chapter quizzes delivered via the World Wide Web, is also available.
Thomas Edison State College is located in the capitol city of Trenton, New Jersey. Programs of Study:
Thomas Edison State College, which provides adults with access to the best choices in higher education, offers 14 associate, baccalaureate and masters degrees in more than 100 areas of study including management, business, liberal arts, applied science and technology, nursing and human services. Students earn degrees through a variety of rigorous academic methods, including completing independent study courses and by documenting college-level knowledge they already have. Students also use examinations, college credit for learning acquired through military or corporate education programs, classroom courses at other accredited colleges and other high-quality options designed for todays busy adult.
Thomas Edison State Colleges Military Degree Completion Program (MDCP), which serves military personnel worldwide, was developed to accommodate the special needs of military personnel whose location, re-location and time constraints make traditional college attendance difficult, if not impossible. The program allows students to engage in a degree program wherever they may be stationed and allows for maximum credit for military training and education. In addition, Thomas Edison State College participates in the Navy College Program Distance Learning Partnership created by the U.S. Navy in response to sailors needs for greater access to higher education and is a participant in the Army University Access Online (eArmyU) program, which enables U.S. enlisted soldiers to obtain professional technical certifications and associate, baccalaureate and masters degrees using laptop computers to access online courses while they serve in the Army.
Thomas Edison State College has an exceptional program designed specifically for community and county college students. The Degree Pathways Program is a partnership between Thomas Edison State College and New Jerseys community and county colleges and allows students and graduates to complete a baccalaureate degree at home, in the workplace or at their local two-year college. The Degree Pathways Program allows students at community colleges to make a smooth transition directly into a Thomas Edison State College baccalaureate degree program. The Degree Pathways Program allows students to transfer up to 80 credits from a community or county college toward the 120 credits needed for a baccalaureate degree. The program was developed to help students make a seamless transition by providing coordinated support in admissions, academic programming, advisement, registration and the sharing of technologies.
Thomas Edison State College will grant credit for current professional licenses or certificates that have been approved for credit by the Colleges Academic Council. Students who have earned one of the licenses or certificates approved for credit must submit notarized copies of license or certificate and current renewal card, if appropriate, to receive credit. A list of licenses and certificates approved for credit may be found in the Colleges Prospectus. Furthermore, Thomas Edison State College offers 14 certificate programs including a 12-credit, online e-Commerce certificate and an 18-credit Certificate in Fitness and Wellness Services.
Thomas Edison State College offers two masters degree programs that have broad appeal to adult students who desire to build professional expertise through completing quality, online degreesthe Master of Science in Management(MSM) and the Master of Arts in Professional Studies(MAPS). The Colleges 12 undergraduate degrees are Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science in Applied Science and Technology, Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, Bachelor of Science in Human Services, Bachelor of Science in Nursing (students must live or work in New Jersey; out of state RNs are considered for admission on a case-by-case basis), Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences (a joint degree program with the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) School of Health Related Professions (SHRP), Associate in Arts, Associate in Applied Science, Associate in Science in Management, Associate in Science in Applied Science and Technology, Associate in Science in Natural Science and Mathematics, and Associate in Science in Public and Social Services. Cost:
Tuition is payment for all costs directly associated with the academic delivery of a Thomas Edison State College education to registered students. Fees are designated as payment for administrative services associated with other activities in support of that educational process and for materials used by students for courses and other activities undertaken by them. Thomas Edison State College offers one annual tuition plan, the Comprehensive Tuition Plan, for students who want access to all components of the tuition package. For those students who have determined that their particular situation is one where only components of the Comprehensive Tuition Plan are required, the College offers the Enrolled Options Plan. Financial Aid:
Thomas Edison State College participates in a number of federal and state aid programs. Eligible Thomas Edison State College students who are taking the required number of Thomas Edison State College courses may be considered for Pell Grants and federal loans. Eligible New Jersey residents may also tap a variety of state grants and loan programs. Students may use state aid to meet all or part of their college costs, provided they are taking at least 12 credits per semester. Detailed information about the financial aid process may be found in the financial aid packet, which is available from the Office of Financial Aid and Veterans Affairs. Another source of financial assistance is the educational benefits that companies offer to their employees. Applying:
Adults 21 years of age with a high school diploma, who are seeking an associate, baccalaureate or masters degree, are eligible to become Thomas Edison State College students. There are no tests required for admission to Thomas Edison State College. Because Thomas Edison State College delivers high-quality education directly to students wherever they live or work, students may complete degree requirements at their convenience without travel to the Thomas Edison State College campus. A computer is required only to take Thomas Edison State College courses offered online, and for the MSM and MAPS degree programs. Once a student is enrolled in a specific degree program, an evaluator determines the number of credits the student has already earned and fits those into the degree program requirements.
