Distance Learning Program
In an increasingly technology-reliant climate, managers with the expertise to handle the varied challenges of the dynamic organization are in great demand. NYU's Master of Science in management and systems is designed to develop leadership in the management of technology as a strategic corporate resource for greater return on investment (ROI). The M.S. equips students with a combination of management and technical skills needed to effectively deploy and administer information technology to achieve business success in this highly competitive global environment. The master's program can be earned online or on-site at NYU's Midtown Center, located at 11 West 42nd Street, New York, New York.

With an M.S. in management and systems, students attain a distinct advantage over the competition and specific knowledge that can be readily applied to business situations. The M.S. in management and systems has been recognized for its rigor and innovation with a 2001 Excellence in Education Award for Online Education from the Electronic Document Systems Foundation.

The Graduate Certificate in Information Technology is geared to two kinds of students: first, those who would like to acquire a broader knowledge of the eclectic material that the concentration courses have to offer; and second, to those not yet ready to commit to the Master of Science in management and system's curriculum. While enrolled in the graduate certificate program, students may apply to the Master of Science in management and systems. Courses in the graduate certificate program may be used to satisfy some course requirements for the master's degree. The majority of students transfer into the degree program, although some elect to complete only the graduate certificate.

Through the Virtual College, NYU's online delivery system, the School of Continuing and Professional Studies (SCPS) has been a pioneer in developing and delivering graduate courses online. Students find NYU's online courses to be the best available because they are student-centered, interactive, well organized, engaging, and feature high levels of interactivity with faculty members and classmates. Unlike most online programs, courses are comprehensive. Multiple modes of instruction are offered to meet the multiple learning styles of students. Lectures involve audio and visual tools. Delivery is a mix of synchronous and asynchronous-with an online conferencing tool that allows for real-time discussions, Web safaris, and instructor-led sessions with PowerPoint slides, live chat, readings, application sharing, group and individual assignments, and more-to ensure that learning happens online. In addition, there are a comprehensive threaded discussion board system and team management tools. Students and instructors participate in lively and dynamic online interaction, including text and voice chat over the Internet. A Web-based conferencing and training-delivery application enables training and information sharing among geographically dispersed audiences at their desktops.

To participate in the online program through the Virtual College, the following computer equipment is required: a Pentium-class computer with a processor of 300 MHz or higher, at least 32 MB of RAM (64 MB is recommended), Windows 98 or 2000, connection to a personal Internet service provider (ISP) and e-mail, a modem with at least 56.6K, and Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher.

NYU's Elmer Holmes Bobst Library and Study Center, one of the largest open-stack research libraries in the world, houses more than 3 million of its nearly 4.4 million volumes. In addition to books, journals, and other print materials, the library provides access to many nonprint resources. These include microforms, databases, and other electronic resources that students can connect to from home or from the residence halls; extensive video and audio collections; and a variety of computer equipment and software programs.

While completing studies at NYU, students have full access to all NYU facilities, including open computer labs. Online, students have Internet access to the NYU library, as well as an extensive variety of databases. Each student has an NYU e-mail account that allows global access to the NYU home page and many other online resources.

NYU's central source for computing, information, network, and telecommunications services is Information Technology Services (ITS). ITS maintains four large, modern computer labs with high-end Macintosh and Windows computers, laser printers, CD-ROM drives, related multimedia equipment, and a wide variety of up-to-date software. The Client Services division of ITS provides comprehensive help on the materials and equipment available to students in person and via telephone, e-mail, and the Web.

NYU's faculty of distinguished scholars and expert practitioners represent a diverse cross section of business and technology and practice a cutting-edge, hands-on approach to learning. Their appointments are based on their superior credentials, commitment to teaching excellence, and status as exemplary role models for the business world. The trends, technological advances, and relevant, topical headlines of the day are classroom material for analysis and discussion. Whether students take classes online or on-site, they find that faculty members are responsive and accessible, take an avid interest in their students' involvement with study, and are passionate about their own areas of expertise.

Programs of Study
The master's integrated curriculum provides a holistic approach to understanding the needs of the organization in the new millennium. Concentrations include leadership and knowledge management, applied database technologies, management in the Internet E-conomy, and systems management. For more information about each of the concentrations, students should visit http://www.scps.nyu.edu/415.

Students can meet the Graduate Certificate in Information Technology requirements by taking four courses in any one topic area and one additional course from any of the topic areas, for a total of five courses. Students should see the master's degree information for topic areas.
