Distance Learning Program
Eastern Michigan University's Distance Education program offers students three convenient distance learning options. First, EMU's online courses allow students to attend class when it's convenient for their busy schedule-early in the morning, during the weekend, or even at 2 a.m. Whether students live just 5 or 500 miles from EMU's campus, they are able to learn conveniently, using a computer from their home, office, hotel room, military base, or "virtually" any other location in the world. Second, Independent Learning courses allow students to enroll anytime, learn at their own pace, avoid commuting and parking inconveniences, satisfy general education requirements, and submit course work via Internet, fax, or U.S. mail. The third option is Interactive Television courses, which allow students to enroll in a single course that may be offered at multiple locations.
Distance learners can complete their online education entirely via the Internet. Registration, book buying, discussions, homework assignments, and exams are all available at the click of a computer mouse.
Courses are delivered via World Wide Web, videotapes and DVDs, print, and ITV. Students may meet in person or interact via e-mail, World Wide Web, mail, telephone, fax, or interactive television.
More than 100 faculty members from EMU's academic departments currently teach online, Independent Learning, and Interactive Television courses at EMU.
Prior Learning and Portfolio Development is offered to students seeking credit for prior learning through portfolio assessment. A free workshop helps students identify competencies and document experience to create a portfolio to present for assessment by faculty members in appropriate departments.
Programs of Study
EMU-Online offers the Master of Science in engineering management; Master of Science in quality; Bachelor of Science in human nutrition through the Coordinated Program in Dietetics (CPD); Master of Science in human nutrition (CPD); Bachelor of Science in technology management (degree-completion program); Master of Arts in educational media and technology; graduate certificate in legal administration; and graduate certificate in educational media and technology.
Applying for Distance Education
Students may register by World Wide Web, mail, fax, and e-mail and in person.
Students may transfer credits from another institution or may earn credits through examinations, portfolio assessment, military training, or business training.
Undergraduate admission requirements include a completed application; a $30 application fee; transcripts from all high schools, colleges, or universities previously attended; and ACT or SAT I scores for persons with fewer than 12 college credits who are under 21 (no ACT or SAT I test scores are required for individuals over the age of 21). Individuals with 12 or more transferable credits apply as transfer students and usually do not need to send high school transcripts.
Graduate admission requirements include a completed application, a $35 application fee, and all transcripts from any colleges or universities the student has attended. In addition, each graduate program has its own requirements, which may include any or all of the following: proof of a GRE or GMAT score, a personal statement, one or more letters of recommendation, and a teaching certificate, for students planning to study education. Costs
Out-of-state and international students can take EMU-Online courses at in-state tuition rates. In 2007-08, per-credit-hour rates for Michigan and Ohio residents were $214 for all levels (100-400) of undergraduate courses, $390 for lower-level (500-600) graduate courses, and $451 for upper-level (700-999) graduate courses.
